Millennials are certainly the talk of the town nowadays. Whether you’ve been paying attention to the good stereotypes or the bad, the truth is that as an employer, you will need to learn just exactly how to manage your millennial employees.

That is not to say that Millennials are difficult to manage; on the contrary, most Millennials are eager to start their careers and ready to take on whatever tasks you give them. Millennials do have distinguishing qualities, however, so you will need to learn how to use those qualities to your advantage.

Here are six of the best ways to engage your millennial employees:

1. Provide feedback: Millennial employees are eager to learn, but they are young – that is, they are still in need of more experience. Offering constructive criticism to your millennial employees is a great way to manage without micromanaging, as well as giving them the little bit of training that they most likely need. Your millennial employees will be thrilled to hear, directly from you, what it is that the company needs and wants and what they are doing right and wrong.

2. Don’t be a technophobe: When it comes to fluency in the newest technology, Millennials are far and away the best out there. Digital technology has been growing alongside the Millennial generation since they were kids, so it is no wonder that it is nearly a second language to them. How does this benefit you? For starters, technology can seriously improve a company’s productivity, and secondly, you won’t have to spend too much time or money training your millennial employees on how to use these tools.

3. Use their social media skills: In this day and age, social media is an essential platform for small business growth, branding, marketing, and reaching customers directly. Think of it as free advertising – not taking advantage of this would truly be a missed opportunity.

That being said, social media is something that Millennials don’t tend to struggle with very often. If you’ve been meaning to improve your company’s social media presence, perhaps your millennial employee is the perfect person to help you out.

4. Offer the ability to work remotely: If you are able to, you might consider allowing your millennial employees (or all your employees) to work remotely. In this modern era of technology, it is becoming easier and easier for employers to allow their teams to work remotely. Being able to comfortably work from home – and not to mention, the lack of commute – could very well benefit your employees’ overall happiness, and therefore improve the quality of their work and performance. This option is becoming increasingly desirable among Millennials, in particular.

5. Give acknowledgement: If employee retention really is a priority for you, then you should definitely make a point to notice when a Millennial employee has gone above and beyond, or improved in some way, and offer them some positive reinforcement for that accomplishment. This is one of the little things that can really go a long way.

6. Provide meaningful work: A paycheck is not everything to them. Millennials want to grow their skill set, and they also want the work they do to make a difference. If you want to attract (and retain) the most in-demand potential employees then, give them new projects that stretch them, or consider making your business greener, and so on.
