Can You Really Get on Page 1 of Google? Yes. Here’s How:

You’ve got a business website. Now, how do you get potential customers to visit it — and, more importantly, how do you get them to visit your business?

Where your business website ranks in Google search results is crucial. Here’s why: An astounding 91% of website traffic comes from the first page of Google search results. (By comparison, just 4% of traffic comes from the second page of Google search results.)

Search engine optimization (SEO) can help you get your website to the first page of Google search results. Here are three steps to successful SEO.

Step 1. Use the right keywords on your business website

Keywords are the words prospects are likely to use when they search online for businesses like yours. You can use Google’s Keyword Planner to search for relevant keywords for your business and your target audience. Then use them in your website content, tags and meta-descriptions.

Keep in mind that keywords can be more than one word. In fact, “long-tail” phrases with multiple keywords can be very effective for small business SEO. There is less competition among businesses to rank for long-tail keywords, so you stand a better chance of ranking well for them.  Try using these long-tail keywords in website content such as subheadings or product descriptions. Step 2. Create a mobile-optimized business website

In 2016, the percentage of Internet searches on mobile devices surpassed the number of searches on desktops for the first time. The better your business website is optimized for mobile use, the better your search engine results position will be.   • Keep it brief. Lengthy text is hard to read on a smartphone screen; focus on the basics to get your message across.
  • Make it easy to click. Whether you want the user to click-to-call your business, or click a link to go to a landing page, include plenty of white space so your call to action buttons are easy to tap on a mobile phone.
  • Make sure it loads quickly. A rapid loading time is especially important when users are viewing your website on a mobile device.

Step 3. Improve your business website content

Getting on the first page of Google search results won’t matter if visitors come to your website homepage and quickly leave. (This is called “bouncing” and if people leave your website after briefly visiting just one page, your website has a high bounce rate.) A high bounce rate means website visitors aren’t taking the actions you want them to.

There are a couple of ways to keep visitors around longer.

  • Start by adding more useful website content to pique their interest. For example, you could start a blog, share infographics, or post videos on your website to get more attention.
  • Adding links from one piece of content on your website (such as a blog post) to another will also help encourage website visitors to click deeper into your site.
  • Promote your content to others in your industry and try to get other websites to link to your content.
